Espanta Mascara - Original Oil & Acrylic Painting
Espanta Mascara - Original Oil & Acrylic Painting
Espanta Mascara
A traditional Mexican ceremonial mask—carved wood with devil horns and a gourd body—surrounded by monarch butterflies. "Espanta Mascara" translates to "scare mask," used in traditional dances and festivals to frighten away evil spirits, bad luck, or unwanted forces.
But the monarch butterflies transform this image of fear into something else entirely. Monarchs migrate thousands of miles to Mexico each year, arriving during Día de los Muertos. They're believed to carry the souls of departed loved ones, returning home. Here, they circle the mask—perhaps reclaiming it, perhaps showing that what scares us can also be sacred.
The mask represents old Mexico—traditions, folklore, the belief in spirits and protection. The butterflies represent migration, return, transformation. Together, they speak to the duality of Mexican-American identity: honoring what came before while transforming into something new.
