Happy Birthday Palo - Original Oil Painting

$5,200.00

Happy Birthday Palo

The aftermath of a birthday party—balloon flowers, plastic bags, toy guns, party favors scattered across a table. This coming-of-age painting reflects on Mexican-American childhood, when birthdays meant piñatas, cheap plastic toys from the swap meet, balloons twisted into shapes, and the particular joy of celebrations held together with love rather than money.

"Palo" is short for Palomares. This is personal—a reflection on my own coming of age, the birthday parties that marked time, the objects that defined childhood joy. The balloon flower, still inflated but already losing shape. The pump that gave it life. The toys that cost little but meant everything.

The painting captures that moment between childhood and whatever comes next—when you're old enough to see the seams, to recognize the effort behind the celebration, to understand what your parents sacrificed for a party. The scattered objects suggest both abundance and impermanence, joy and its inevitable end.
