JB Store

A storefront in East Los Angeles—"JB STORE DISPLAY FIXTURE BUY & SELL TRADE RENTAL SPACE FOR LEASE SHELVING"—with roll-down shutters closed mid-day. This is the landscape I know: small businesses struggling, "SPACE FOR LEASE" signs becoming permanent fixtures, the working-class economy made visible.

JB Store sells store fixtures—the shelving and displays that other small businesses need to survive. But the closed shutters and lease sign suggest this business of helping businesses might itself be failing. The figure with a shopping cart moves past, part of the daily rhythm of the street, while the vast blue sky suggests possibility above the economic reality below.

I document the ever-changing landscape of Los Angeles—the stores that anchor neighborhoods, the signs that promise NEW and USED, the spaces waiting for whatever comes next. This storefront represents countless others: family businesses, immigrant entrepreneurship, the informal economy that sustains working-class communities even as gentrification and economic pressure reshape the city.
