The Flower Fields are a Southern California treasure, fifty acres of giant ranunculus flowers blooming each spring. Painting en plein air among these flowers meant working fast to capture the shifting light, the gentle movement of petals in ocean breezes, the overwhelming abundance of color.

Working in an impressionist style with visible, energetic brushwork, I captured the texture of countless blooms, the green stems and leaves creating depth, the sense of standing within a sea of flowers. The impasto technique—thick paint applied with quick strokes—conveys the immediacy of painting outdoors, responding to light and atmosphere in real time.
