Mariposas & Marigolds
Butterflies and marigolds come together in this vibrant celebration of Mexican tradition and natural beauty. Marigolds (cempasúchil) hold sacred significance in Mexican culture, guiding spirits during Día de los Muertos, while butterflies represent transformation, migration, and the souls of loved ones returning home.
My artwork is rooted in the vibrant culture of East L.A., inspired by the people, language, and places that shaped my identity as Chicano. Through still lifes, I document the ever-changing landscape of Los Angeles while celebrating our cultural iconography.
This piece honors the traditions passed down through generations—the flowers that adorn altars, the monarchs that migrate thousands of miles, the connections between life and memory.

✦ ABOUT MY WORK
I aim to celebrate the richness of the Latino community and my Mexican heritage, rejecting narratives that reduce our experiences to poverty or injustice. Instead, my work highlights our vibrancy, creativity, and strength, reminding viewers of the beauty in both the everyday and the extraordinary.
✦ CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
Marigolds are the flowers of the dead, their bright orange petals lighting the path for spirits to find their way home during Día de los Muertos. Butterflies, especially monarchs, are believed to carry the souls of departed loved ones. Together, they create a powerful meditation on memory, migration, and belonging.
