Red Bouquet - Original Painting (Homage to My Mothers Series)
Red Bouquet - Original Painting (Homage to My Mothers Series)
Red Bouquet
Roses and brooms arranged as a bouquet—beauty and labor intertwined. From my "Homage to My Mothers" series, this painting transforms cleaning tools into flowers, elevating the invisible work of immigrant mothers to something worthy of celebration and reverence.
My mother immigrated from Mexico to the United States, learned a new language and a new way of life. She embodies the immigrant spirit—working cleaning jobs, domestic labor, providing for family while maintaining dignity. The pink brooms become flowers because her work deserves to be seen as beautiful, as worthy of a still life painting, as valuable as roses.
The ornate damask wallpaper background suggests the homes these mothers clean—elegant spaces where their labor creates beauty for others. By painting brooms alongside roses in a vase, I insist that domestic work is not lesser than, but equal to, any labor. This bouquet honors my mother and all mothers like her who build new lives through work society often refuses to see.
